History of the G Shock
In 1981 an engineer by the name of Kikuo Ibe, who was working for Casio at the time, came up with the idea that he wanted to make a watch which could withstand the "triple ten" test. In his mind this meant creating a watch which could survive a ten meter free fall onto a hard surface. The watch would also withstand being submersed under water up to 100 meters and withstand ten times the pressure at sea level. In other terms, the watch is ten bar water resistant. Lastly, he wanted to make a watch with no less than a ten year battery life.
Months went by with no success, and the dream of creating such a rugged watch was seeming more impossible with every passing day. This is about the time Kikuo Ibe was walking along the sidewalk and happened to notice children play in the distance. They were bounce passing a ball back and forth, and then it hit him. He recognized how the impact from the ball bouncing on the ground does not reach, or negatively impact, the inside of the ball. This random observation led him and his team to develop a watch design where the interior module is suspended away from the exterior shell and separated by a rubber shield/guard.
After hundreds of prototypes were dropped from third story windows and rooftops, they finally had the proper design and launched their first G Shock in 1983. Over 19 million G shocks had been sold across the entire globe by 1998. Throughout the years they have developed subcategories such as the S-series and the Baby G, which have been designed for women, children, and anyone with a naturally smaller wrist. With all the colors, styles, and options to choose from, it's no question to how these watches have exploded in the timepiece market. G Shocks are a great for anyone but they will always be sought after by the adventurers, the true outdoor men/women, and the hard blue-collar worker.
